Annual Report on Intercountry Adoptions

In December, the U.S. Department of State released their FY 2010 Annual Report on Intercountry Adoptions.  The State Department first published this report for FY 2008 in response to a requirement put in place by the Intercountry Adoption Act of 2000.

The report shows that the total number for FY 2010 is 11,059 adoptions.  For the 6th year in a row, intercountry adoption has been on a steady decline.  Over the past decade, intercountry adoption saw a peak at 22,990 in FY 2004, however, the past two years we have seen numbers lower than they were in FY 1999.

Again this past year, China has been the top sending country at 3,401 total adoptions.  The second and third sending countries also remained unchanged from FY 2009 with Ethiopia at 2,513 total adoptions, and Russia at 1,082.

To assist Americans in adopting internationally, the State Department has a list of Hague Accredited Adoption Providers, as well as country-specific information that explains the requirements and process of each country.

Adopted for Life

During the month of February Crossway Books and Christian Audio are offering a free download of Dr. Russell Moore’s book Adopted for Life. This is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about their own adoption in Christ and how it then overflows into tangible adoption and orphan care as the Body of Christ.

Empowered to Connect

Empowered To Connect, together with Show Hope, will host the next Empowered To Connect Conference in Denver, Colorado on April 8-9, 2011. Online registration for the conference is now open.

The Empowered To Connect Conference is a two-day conference for adoptive and foster parents, ministry leaders and professionals designed to help them better understand how to connect with children from hard places in order to help them heal and become all that God desires for them to be. Led by Dr. Karyn Purvis (Director of the TCU Institute of Child Development ), together with Michael & Amy Monroe (Leaders of Tapestry Adoption & Foster Care Ministry), this conference is ideal for adoptive and foster parents, those considering adoption or foster care and those who are serving and supporting others, including social workers, agency professionals, church staff and ministry leaders, counselors, therapists and others involved in adoption and foster care ministries or services.

Conference sessions will be held from 9 am until 5 pm on both days. Light refreshments will be provided during breaks throughout the event, with “on your own” lunch breaks scheduled from 12:00 to 1:30pm. All participants are highly encouraged to attend sessions on both days. Professionals may be eligible to receive CEU credit for their participation.

Adoption Tax Credit for 2010

A while ago we blogged about the changes that the IRS made to the Adoption Tax Credit for 2011 and we wanted to remind you once again.

The  credit was increased from $12,150 to $13,170.

The changes also now make the credit refundable.

You must fill out Form 8839, “Qualified Adoption Expenses”, and include one or more adoption related documents.  Because of the documentation that is required you cannot submit your taxes by E-File.

For further information please ask a tax advisor.  You can also get further information by going here.
